MACP 2015 “Church Planting and Revitalization

Speakers:
David Doran, John Aloisi, Mark Brock, Bruce Compton, Lukus Counterman, Sam Dawson, Ben Edwards, Grace Baptist Missions Director, Dave Marriott, Tim Miller, Steve Pettit, Mark Snoeberger, Jim Tillotson

Summary: In an increasingly secularized, pluralistic society, many Americans are unaware of even the basic tenets of the gospel. As America has lost its religious moorings, many Christians have become assimilated into the culture, rather than being distinct from it. This has been reflected in churches throughout the country.

Because of the increased need for biblically grounded churches in America, our theme this year is “Church Planting and Revitalization.” It will be a beneficial time for us to see how God is leading men to plant churches or revitalize them and to pray more intentionally for church planters and those they minister to.

MACP 2014 “Striving Together for the Faith of the Gospel”

Speakers:
David Doran, Jim Newcomer, Chris Anderson, Brian Fuller, Lukus Counterman, Ken Endean, Mark Brock, Mark Snoeberger, John Aloisi, Ben Edwards, David Doran, Jr.

Summary: It seems like every day brings more bad news in this crazy, sin-cursed world. And it seems, at least sometimes, like God’s people are dropping into defense-mode as the world becomes increasingly hostile toward Christianity. While all of this may be new to us, it is not different from the landscape that the churches in the New Testament faced. The Philippians, for example, were “granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake” (Phil 1:29).

The darkness of our day should make us more urgent about obedience to Christ’s commission, not less so. To that end, the theme for our fall conference this year, based on Philippians 1:27, is “Striving Together for the Faith of the Gospel.” By God’s grace, we’ll gather for two days, October 16-17, to focus our attention on biblical truth about building greater unity within and between our assemblies for the sake of the gospel. Incredible gospel opportunities are all around us. We need to sharpen our focus on biblical truths that will equip and encourage us to make the most of them.

MACP 2012 “The Mystery of Christ: God’s Glory among the Gentiles”

Speakers:
David Doran, DBTS Faculty, Michael Vlach, Neal Cushman, and Jack Klem

Summary: The relationship between the Old and New Testaments has been debated (sometimes hotly) since the book of Acts! This makes sense since so much hangs in the balance of properly understanding this issue—What role does the Law have in a NT believer’s life? Is the Church a New Israel? Does God have a future plan for Israel? Are the ordinances of the Church rooted in OT practices or distinctly different?

Clearly, the Apostle Paul believed that there was something new about what God was doing among the Gentiles. He calls it the mystery of Christ and declares that it was not known in other generations, but had now been revealed to the apostles and prophets (Eph 3:4-5). All sides recognize this to some degree, but debate whether the relationship with the Old is one of continuity or discontinuity–is the present a continuation of the past or has God introduced something new that differs significantly from what preceded it?

Both sides of this debate have at times overstated the case for either continuity or discontinuity. And sometimes the debate has been so uncharitable that many want to just drop it. Yet, there are important theological and practical ramifications attached to each viewpoint. Our understanding of Scripture, Christian growth and living, the nature of the Church’s mission, and important aspects of church polity all are affected by these issues.

MACP 2011 “Church Planting & Renewal”

Speakers:
David Doran, Bryan Brock, Mark Brock, Ken Brown, Andrew Haney, Sam Hendrickson, Matt Ortega, Jason Parker, Dave Saxton, Jay Searcy, the DBTS Faculty, and ICBC Pastoral Staff

Summary: America is definitely not an unreached mission field, but there is still much Gospel work that needs to be done. Population growth and shifts make it critical to plant churches in new areas, but also in areas that have been abandoned. We shouldn’t waste time debating whether we should plant churches in the suburbs or in the city—we should do both. We need more healthy churches, whether those are newly planted or dying congregations that have been infused with new leadership and life. God has graciously used a number of DBTS graduates to plant new churches and rebuild dying churches. We’ve asked a number of them to come and share what God has done and what they think would be helpful for us all to consider as we pray and work for more healthy churches in our own country.

MACP 2010 “Church, Kingdom, Mission: Understanding and Assessing the Missional Church Movement”

Speakers:
David Doran and the DBTS Faculty (William Combs, Robert McCabe, Bruce Compton, Sam Dawson, Mark Snoeberger, Pearson Johnson), and ICBC Pastoral Staff (Dan Winnberg, Ben Edwards)

Theme: Theology and ministry go hand in hand. Our understanding of what the church is always affects our understanding of what the church is supposed to do. The Missional Church Movement represents a recasting of both. While it is true that many use missional in a non-technical sense, for many others that word summarizes new theological commitments about the church, the kingdom, and the concept of mission itself. Our goal in this conference is to get past debates about the word missional in order to understand and evaluate the significant theological and ministerial issues at stake.

  • What is the relationship between the Church and the Kingdom?
  • What is the mission of the Church?
  • What is the relationship between the great commandment and the great commission?
  • What is the Church’s role in the transformation of society?
  • Does the church exist to serve the world?

God’s will for His people is to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Ideas have consequences. The radical reformation of the church which is underway needs to be examined carefully. Where the Bible supports the changes, we must change, but where the changes lead us away from biblical obedience, we must reject them. One conference will not settle all the questions, but we hope it will provide a valuable opportunity to look at the questions carefully and honestly.
