R. Bruce Compton, Th.D.
Professor of Biblical Languages and Exposition

Dr. Compton has taught at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary since 1984. He is currently professor of Biblical Languages and Exposition. He received his A.B. degree in political science from UCLA, the M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Denver Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Th.D. degree in Greek and New Testament with a minor in Hebrew and Old Testament from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN. Prior to coming to DBTS, Dr. Compton was assistant professor of Biblical Languages at the Denver Baptist Theological Seminary from 1977 to 1984.

Dr. Compton has written articles for various journals. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and is listed in the 1993 edition of Who’s Who in Religion. He has served as an adjunct faculty at the Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Plymouth, MN; Maranatha Baptist Bible College Graduate School in Watertown, WI; and Grace Baptist Theological Seminary in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. He has spoken in churches and professional conferences throughout the US and overseas. He traveled to Israel as part of a DBTS study tour of the Holy Lands in the summer of 2000.

Dr. Compton was ordained by Inter-City Baptist Church in Allen Park, MI, and has served as an interim pastor in several churches in the southeast Michigan area. He was on active duty with the United States Air Force as a pilot from 1968 to 1974. From 1987 to his retirement in 2002, he served in the Air National Guard as a military chaplain. He resides in Allen Park with his wife Mari, a former high school English teacher. He and Mari have two grown sons, Joel, who is married to the former Shelley Crawford, and Jared, who is married to the former Charisse Rodman. Both sons are students at DBTS and anticipate entering vocational ministry upon the completion of their studies.
